The WorldStar competition celebrates innovation and technology in the packaging industry on a global level. Recyclable packaging from our subsidiary Chemosvit Folie was one of the award-winning solutions of the latest edition.
Record-breaking edition with new categories
WorldStar is a global packaging innovation competition that has been organised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) for more than 50 years. A record number of solutions (488) from 41 countries was entered in 2022.
This edition was also exceptional thanks to the introduction of new main categories – Gift Packaging and Digital Packaging. One special category called Accessible Packaging was also added. This evaluates packaging that is easy to open, grip and handle.
Companies qualify for the WorldStar Packaging Awards with their success in the national OBAL ROKU (PACKAGING OF THE YEAR) competition. One of the two solutions that succeeded at the regional level also won an award in the global competition.

The PE laminate succeeded in the Packaging Materials and Components category and was developed in line with the circular economy principles. It is a duplex mono-structured laminate that uses offset printing with electron beam (EB) curing. This type of printing is energy efficient and solvent-free.
The white appearance also made it possible for the Chemosvit Folie team to reduce 100% of the white printing ink. That led to the reduction of the proportion of non-recyclable content in the laminate. The PE laminate is an alternative to the non-recyclable triplex structure that is used, for example, for nuts and dry fruits packaging.
The reduction of the number of layers in the laminate and the proportion of non-recyclable components has also reduced CO2 emissions. The film is suitable for processing on automatic packaging machines and, thanks to the stiffness of the two films used, can be formed into a stand-up pouch with a zip.
The film has 95% recyclable content. It can be recycled in a PE recycling stream and used as regranulate to produce flexible film for non-food applications.
The award ceremony will take place during the Interpack fair in Düsseldorf on the 6th of May, 2023. Winners in the special categories – President’s Award, Sustainability Award, Marketing Award and Packaging That Saves Award – will also be announced during the event.
